SINUS LIFT & PROCEDURE

Looking for Dental implants, but you need a sinus lift? Why you need it and what is the procedure? How is it performed? We answered some of the most common questions here, so you can relax and feel confident in preparing for your TREATMENT and ready to understand more about sinus lift and procedure.

WHAT IS A SINUS LIFT PROCEDURE?

A sinus lift procedure adds bone to your upper jaw in the space between your molars and premolars, which is also the space between your jaw and the maxillary sinuses on either side of your nose. The SINUS membrane has to move upward or ‘lifted’ to make room for the bone.

WHEN DO YOU NEED A SINUS LIFT?

Dental implants need to be place in healthy bone tissue. After tooth extractions. However, you can experience reduced bone length in the upper jaw. In such cases, a sinus lifting procedure helps to maintain enough bone length to place an implant. A sinus lift can make the IMPLANT placement procedure possible, allowing patients with bone loss to enjoy the benefits of a long-term solution to their missing or failing teeth by using dental implant

HOW IS A SINUS LIFTING PROCEDURE PERFORMED?

A key to implant success is the bone’s quantity and quality where the implant is to placed. The upper back jaw has traditionally been one of the most difficult areas to successfully place dental implants due to insufficient bone quantity and quality and the close proximity to the sinus. If you’ve lost bone in that area due to reasons such as PERIODONTAL DISEASE or tooth loss, you may be left without enough bone to place implants

Sinus lift surgery can help correct this problem by raising the sinus floor and developing bone for the placement of dental implants. There are several techniques which can use to raise the sinus and allow for new bone to form. In one common technique, an incision is made to expose the bone. Then a small circle cut into the bone. This bony piece is lift into the sinus cavity, much like a trap door, and space underneath is filled with bone graft material.

Finally, the incision is close so the healing can begin. If there is not enough bone under the sinus cavity, we create a small opening from the sidewall of the jaw bone. From this window, we separate the sinus membrane and place the bone graft into the sinus cavity. We call this technique an ‘open sinus lift operation’. This one is slightly more complicated than the closed technique mentioned above.

HOW LONG IS THE TYPICAL HEALING TIME?

After the sinus lift operation. The full healing process will take at least 4 months. Your implants can be fit after that from 4-12 months after your sinus lift surgery. This gives more time to our bone to add and mesh with your existing bone. The amount of time between the surgery and implants depends on how much bone was added and your particular healing time. Undergoing sinus lift surgery has been shown to greatly increase your chances for successful implants. This can last for many years to come. Most patients experience minimal discomfort during this procedure

WHICH MATERIAL DO WE USE TO ADD VOLUME TO YOUR JAWBONE?

We use sterile, artificial bone particles obtained from various sources. It may be bone that we take from another part of your jawbone or synthetic bone materials obtained from animals (usually bovine and horse). These synthetic bone grafts are prepare in special conditions – sterilize with gamma rays and always FDA, WHO certified.

WHO ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR THIS PROCEDURE OF SINUS LIFT?

  • Radiotherapy history with the head and neck
  • Some systemic disease (uncontrolled diabetes, bone metabolism disease)
  • Infection (Sinusitis)
  • Heavy smokers (more than 20 in a day)

We use special techniques which do not damage the soft tissues, leaving the membrane intact, and special instruments to safely lift it. All sinus operations and grafting procedures can be perform easily and painlessly under local anaesthesia. A thorough investigation of the sinus anatomy and the strict surgical protocol ensures an extremely high success rate.
